My Story

I'm Jennifer McGuiggan, The Word Cellar's purveyor of fine writing and editing. (But most people just call me a freelance writer and editor.) I write nonfiction pieces for publications and work with clients on writing, editing, and coaching projects. I'm also working toward my MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Vermont College of Fine Arts.

You can read more about my story or download my resume (.pdf) if you prefer a chronological rendering of my tale.

I also invite you to read The Stories I Tell (my blog). While you're there, do share some of your own.

If you need words written, edited, or enlivened, I'd be honored to help. Let's chat.

I envision The Word Cellar as a cozy, stone-walled chamber filled with racks and racks of words. We have nouns, verbs, adjectives, and even some adverbs. The prepositions and conjunctions sit next to glass jars of jaunty little pronouns. Perfectly turned phrases shimmer magically in the shadows, and whole sentences often appear on the walls. There's a nook just for punctuation, and another for grammar. (Some people don't like to venture into those areas, but I don't mind them one bit.) Some days you'll find me writing, and others you'll see me editing (my own work or maybe yours!). Stacks of books sit next to overstuffed chairs, beckoning you to delve into a good read. The whole scene is generously illuminated by white twinkle lights, so The Word Cellar is never dark, dank, or scary. This is a place where left brain meets right brain, where whimsy shakes hands with business, and communication is considered a sacred science and time-honored art.

I'm so glad you've joined me.

{a week of} pink: a poem

image sources listed below

Liz is hosting a week of pink on her blog and has invited anyone who needs a little color during the grey days of winter to join in. Today I went in search of something pink, because truth be told, I'm feeling grey on the inside. Sadnesses small and large are piling up in my psyche, making me feel sluggish, sleepy, and small. Pink seemed like a good place to start in the search for joy.

Pink Stands Alone

The color of innocent baby girls and ironic punk chicks,
Pink has no peer.
It is the magical alchemy of red mixed
With white.
But any other color -- blue, orange, green --
Stays itself
No matter how much white you fold in.

Pink is for bubbelgum and lovers,
For breast cancer survivors,
For all the parts of our bodies we cover
In public.
In my youth I hated the color,
A soft rebellion
Against my mother.

Today, blue means home
And pink, joy.
I move from room to room
In this body.
Pink is a part of myself,
But not all.
Every color is love.

this is so joyous and beautiful .... i have been feeling a tad grey as well and participating in liz's week of pink seems to be helping me to see pink in grey, the joy in the lost feeling that always seems to accompany this time of year .. xo

Pink is my favorite color! Get pink tulips or hyacinth, they'll cheer you up. And go read "Between December and february" on my blog. Hearts up!
red becomes pink but blue and green stay what they are: how clever. Black becomes gray and goes well with pink!!

"Every color is love." So true.

I once bought pink tulips for a housemate of mine in the middle of winter. She kissed my cheek and called me a star. I think pink saved the day for both of us.
Beautiful.
